These explanations or proposals for FSM solutions vary from one to another as an aide to learning the general idea: circles/ovals are states of an FSM, any state of an FSM represented by a circle/oval may be viewed as an FSM, arrows name the signal which was perceived that caused the change in state. Easy.

The Arduino Host context needed to make this source usable are left as an exercise for the reader. This FSM uses the simple int and boolean types.

State machines require memory that exists over Time

A necessary software style while implementing state machines is the use of “global” variables in the C language. In a basic Arduino application, everything is one file and global variables are manageable. Software development in industry is always bound by conventions and standards learned the hard way. One thing every software developer knows: global variables must be managed.

In embedded systems, the question of where a variable is located in memory is a key question for almost every variable, or category of similar variables.

What is the App?

This App waits for data to be transferred here over the Bit Bus. When the data is completely transferred by the signal using the carrier, the result is passed to the App. No consideration is made for error conditions or timing requirements.

SimpleSal apologizes here for the minimal Data Access implementation. A full implementation would include access through the Mesa to connected devices. This software does implement one minimal cycle of the FSM. Or does it not?

This state machine diagram is made up for analysis, discussion, criticism.

Transferring data through a bus requires two participants: a bus master (some thing in charge of the sequence), a bus servant (some thing acting under the direction by a master). The Bit Bus definition of “read” and “write” describes the result of the operation, an operation that is by definition always reading one device and writing to another device. That is what a bus does.

The Data signal is being emitted by the writer and perceived by the reader. When a master emitted a signal to a servant, the servant perceives a signal.
When a master perceives a signal from a servant, the servant emitted a signal.

For SimpleSal, “finite” just makes the acronym better than “SM”, maybe not.

The term Finite has a special meaning when considering state machines as formally provable software designs. Formally provable software designs are used to write software that runs on Operating Systems formally proven as Real Time. Therefore, when your software is in charge of the rocket engine, the term Finite means: the software always does only what it was designed to do.

A word in “this style” means “the references that follow define the meaning”. State machine references by SimpleSal will align with these basic definitions.

What is Mr Blinky doing here?

The music’s notes occur at a rate measured in beats per minute (BPM). At a rate of 60 BPM, one note occurs each second; at 120 BPM, two notes occur.

The viewer/listener’s brain perceives the story, the lights, the music. How does changing the BPM of the lights affect the perception? Is there a BPM at which the signal is most effectively perceived by the viewer? For every viewer?

Within the period of Time allocated for each Beat, at what point does the sound start and stop? What is the shape of the signal the Ears perceive and then send to the brain? How does the brain notice the period between each sound shape and why does the rate of sound shapes affect the brain?

The author/creator imagined the software and the sequences, made something that can perform sequences, implanted that knowledge and data into a mesa, executed the software while videoing, edited the video with text and music.

The original physical mesa named Mr Blinky is described in the ESD section.

The equivalent of two copies of Mr Blinky is available using an UnoR4Wifi mesa.

Hidden in this message is the reality that Mr Blinky only focuses on chopping Time up into chunks and playing with those chunks. No motors; no radios.
